| Skills to acquire for the pivot | Eloundou's measured exposure is 40% (human β) and rises to 75% (human ζ): building and updating project plans, producing and distributing project documents, status presentations, status reports, cost-tracking reports and budget estimates are largely delegable to AI, but scoping with stakeholders, negotiating resources with suppliers, assigning responsibilities, resolving the problems the team raises and judging the quality of deliverables remain human. The ζ of 75% says three quarters of the job is at least partly transformable; the β of 40% says that today AI does about two fifths of it without supervision. This moderate β puts the project manager just above the buyer (37) and just below the logistician (45), the human resources manager (45) and the auditor (52), and well behind the software tester (61) or the copywriter (81): coordinating people under deadline pressure is one of the activities AI assists most and replaces least. BLS growth is 7% from 2025 to 2035 for project management specialists (SOC 13-1082): their 1,094,300 jobs in 2025 are projected to reach 1,167,400, a gain of 73,200, with about 76,500 openings a year, mostly replacing workers who leave. The combined 'business operations specialists' group grows 6% and all occupations 3%. BLS attributes the demand to organizations' need to maintain and improve productivity — project managers to hold objectives, deadlines and budgets — and to the growing complexity of information technology projects. The median salary is $102,320 (May 2025), from the BLS 'Project management specialists' profile (SOC 13-1082, $49.19 an hour); the lowest 10% earn less than $61,580 and the highest 10% more than $167,970. The best-paying industries are finance and insurance ($120,700), professional, scientific and technical services ($108,260) and manufacturing ($102,640), ahead of administrative and support services ($98,890) and construction ($98,730). The 'business operations specialists' group shows $82,060 and all occupations $50,980. The project manager sits above the logistician ($82,320), the cost estimator ($78,740) and the market research analyst ($78,760), level with the management analyst ($101,860), and well below the computer and information systems manager ($175,140). Consistency note: the BLS figures cited come from the current edition (May 2025, 2025-2035 projections), the same edition as this card's pivots. |
